Citizen Science Projects

Whether your students are engaging from home, from your school site or ours, citizen science programs help them grow their science skills while gaining an appreciation for the natural world. Here are two citizen science programs offered through Cornell University.

Service Learning Opportunity

Seed Saving for the Patterson Seed Library.
Teach your students about full plant lifecycles, seed reproduction, the importance of biodiversity, and building community food equity through seed sharing.  Over half of the DPHS garden plants were chosen to support community food equity through the Patterson Library's Seed Library. Stanislaus County UC Master Gardeners also offer educational support for adults and teachers to encourage families to grow near-free gardens full of fresh, healthy foods.
Decide to visit the DPHS garden to harvest seeds, collect, and distribute them throughout the community. Our downloadable guides offer tips from the SeedSaver.org,  seed labels, and DPHS Bloom and Propagation Calendar.   All your tools are here.

Garden Care with UC Master Gardeners

Garden with a UC Master Gardener and our DPHS Garden Care Checklists as your community service project.
  1. Contact the Stanislaus UC Master Gardeners (SUCMG) to request to learn how to properly care for the DPHS garden. UCMG are only able to offer instructional guidance during you scheduled activity and will not actively garden with volunteers.
  2. Checklists are included to let UCMG know what seasonal activities you can help with.
  3.  Schedule a date in the DPHS garden. Volunteers will need to bring their own garden tools.
  4. Activity can be used for community service hours.  Office staff are happy to sign CS records tracking your time.
